Aquarium substrates & gravel

The right substrate for a living, stable tank

The substrate is more than decoration: it anchors plants, houses helpful bacteria and directly influences the colour of the water. An unsuitable substrate prevents rooting, clogs up or releases unwanted compounds. At AnimalParadise we offer gravel, sand and nutrient substrates to build a healthy, long-lasting base.

Which substrate should I choose for a planted tank?

For a densely planted tank, a nutrient substrate placed as an underlayer feeds the roots for months, capped with a thin layer of gravel or sand that holds it in place. In an aquarium without demanding plants, neutral gravel or quartz is enough to create a stable, attractive bottom.

Sand or gravel: what difference does it make for fish?

Fine sand suits species that sift the substrate, such as corydoras, because it protects their barbels. Coarser gravel lets water circulate better and traps less waste at the surface. The grain size is therefore chosen according to your fish and your filtration system.

Our substrate and gravel range

  • Gravel & quartz : varied sizes and shades for a decorative, stable bottom.
  • Fine sands : gentle for digging fish and bottom-dwelling species.
  • Nutrient substrates : rich in elements for vigorous plant rooting.
The AnimalParadise expert tip: always rinse gravel and sand in clear water before setting them up: you will avoid a cloudy haze that can take several days to clear.
