UV lighting: the key to your reptiles’ bone health

Without UVB radiation, most diurnal reptiles cannot synthesise vitamin D3 or absorb calcium. Suitable lighting prevents deficiencies and respects the animal’s day/night rhythm.

Why is UVB essential for reptiles?

UVB rays trigger vitamin D3 production, which lets the animal absorb calcium and keep a strong skeleton. Without them, tortoises and lizards develop metabolic bone disease.

What spectrum and photoperiod should I choose?

Match UVB strength to the species (desert dwellers need more than forest ones) and add a UVA spectrum that stimulates activity. Usually allow ten to twelve hours of light a day, adjusted with the season.

Our AnimalParadise UV lighting range

  • UVB tubes : fluorescent strips that spread UVB along the whole length of the terrarium.
  • UVA/UVB lamps : combined bulbs pairing visible light with beneficial radiation.
  • Reflectors and fittings : accessories to direct the beam and improve UV coverage.
The AnimalParadise expert tip: replace your UVB tubes every six to twelve months: the radiation fades long before the visible light goes out.

Our lighting is tested and shipped across Europe so your reptiles get reliable radiation from the moment it arrives.
