Bedding
The bedding that keeps your coop healthy and dry
Good bedding is the key to a clean, odour-free coop. Spread on the floor and in the nest boxes, it absorbs moisture and droppings, insulates against cold and gives your hens a soft base to scratch and lay with confidence.
Which bedding should I choose: straw, shavings or hemp?
Straw is economical and warm, ideal for lining nest boxes. Dust-extracted wood shavings absorb floor moisture well. Hemp bedding, highly absorbent and low in dust, neutralises odours for longer and suits hens with sensitive airways.
How often should I change the coop bedding?
Remove soiled patches under the perch every day and top up as needed. Plan a full clean-out every two to four weeks depending on flock size, replacing all the bedding and disinfecting the floor before laying a fresh layer of five to ten centimetres.
