Substrates
Substrate, the foundation of your terrarium
The substrate lines the terrarium floor and directly affects humidity, hygiene and the natural behaviour of your reptiles and amphibians. The wrong choice unbalances moisture or encourages bacteria. At AnimalParadise we offer sands, fibres, barks and soils for every type of environment.
Which substrate for a desert or tropical terrarium?
In a desert setup, fine sand or a sand-clay mix recreates the arid ground of species like the bearded dragon and drains perfectly. In a tropical setup, coco fibre, sphagnum and bark hold moisture and keep humidity high for geckos and amphibians. Always match the substrate to the natural biotope.
How does substrate help regulate humidity?
An absorbent substrate such as coco fibre releases water gradually and raises humidity, ideal for forest species. Conversely, a draining floor prevents stagnation and mould in dry terrariums. Watch the hygrometer and refresh the bottom layer regularly to keep a healthy environment.
Our terrarium substrate range
- Desert sands and soils : fine sands and clay mixes to recreate arid biotopes and ensure good drainage.
- Tropical fibres and soils : coco fibre, sphagnum and humus that retain moisture for forest species.
- Barks and chips : bark mulch and natural chips for a soft, insulating floor that encourages burrowing.
The AnimalParadise expert tip: provide a generous depth, five to ten centimetres, for burrowing species: they can dig and regulate their own temperature.
