Rat and mouse food

Feeding rats and mice: the omnivore’s balance

Rats and mice are omnivores: unlike the herbivorous rabbit or the carnivorous ferret, they thrive on a varied diet blending cereals, seeds, protein and a little plant matter. The real challenge is balance and keeping fat in check. At AnimalParadise, we offer complete mixes and pellets designed to meet their needs without making them gain weight.

What does a healthy rat or mouse eat?

A base of cereal mix or complete pellets, topped up with small amounts of fresh vegetables and an occasional protein source. The diet should stay moderate in fat: sunflower seeds, peanuts and dried fruit, though much enjoyed, must be limited as they quickly encourage weight gain.

Seed mix or extruded pellets?

Both have their place. A seed mix stimulates foraging and sorting behaviour, but the animal may leave the less fatty pieces; extruded pellets guarantee a uniform intake and prevent selective feeding. A good compromise is to alternate or combine the two in moderation.

Our range of rat and mouse food

  • Complete mixes : varied cereal and seed recipes, balanced to cover the omnivore’s needs.
  • Extruded pellets : uniform nuggets that stop sorting and limit weight gain.
  • Protein and extras : protein supplements and little extras to give sparingly.
The AnimalParadise expert tip: keep fatty seeds such as sunflower for rare rewards; in rats, excess fat quickly leads to obesity and skin problems.

AnimalParadise selects reliable mixes and pellets and delivers throughout Europe, for a balanced ration suited to these small omnivores.
