Filter media, the invisible heart of filtration

A good filter is only as good as what it holds. Filter media trap waste, house beneficial bacteria and clarify the water. Foam, ceramics, activated carbon or wadding: each medium plays a role. At AnimalParadise, we bring together everything you need to fill your filter.

What is the difference between the filter media?

There are three types of filtration. Foam handles mechanical filtration by trapping particles. Ceramics and bio-noodles provide a surface for bacteria for biological filtration. Activated carbon captures pollutants for chemical filtration.

How often should I change my filter media?

Rinse the foam in aquarium water at each service, without sterilising it. Replace activated carbon every three to four weeks, as it becomes saturated. Ceramic media last a long time: change only half at a time to protect the bacteria.

Our range of filter media

  • Filter foam and wadding : they trap particles and refine the clarity of the water.
  • Ceramic media and bio-noodles : a large surface for the bacteria that break down nitrogen waste.
  • Activated carbon and resins : they absorb odours, discolouration and dissolved pollutants.
The AnimalParadise expert tip: never clean all your media at once or under tap water: chlorine destroys the bacteria and unbalances the aquarium cycle.

All our filter media ship quickly across Europe, together with AnimalParadise advice for crystal-clear water.
