Peanuts
Peanuts, the energy that helps birds get through winter
The peanut is a real energy reserve for birds. Rich in both protein and fat, it helps garden species cope when temperatures drop. At AnimalParadise, we select unsalted, unroasted peanuts suited to responsible feeding.
Why give peanuts to birds in winter?
In winter, birds spend a great deal of energy keeping warm and find less natural food. The peanut, rich in fat and protein, gives them lasting fuel that supports effort throughout the day. Tits, nuthatches and finches love them, especially when offered in a mesh feeder or a suitable dispenser.
Shelled or in-shell peanuts: which to choose?
The two complement each other. In-shell peanuts keep birds busy and suit agile species such as tits, while shelled kernels are easier for all to reach. Always choose unsalted, unroasted peanuts; in spring, prefer chips over whole peanuts to avoid any risk of chicks choking.
Our peanut range
- Shelled peanuts : ready-to-eat kernels, easy to reach for most birds.
- In-shell peanuts : to slip into a mesh feeder or dispenser to keep nimble birds busy.
- Peanut chips : handy small pieces, ideal in spring and for small beaks.
The AnimalParadise expert tip: never offer salted, roasted or flavoured peanuts: only plain peanuts are suitable for birds. Keep them away from damp to prevent the growth of toxic moulds.
