Fat balls
Fat balls, winter’s reliable energy boost
Fat balls are among the most energy-rich foods for garden birds. Made of vegetable fat mixed with seeds, they provide a high calorie intake, valuable when the cold sets in and food becomes scarce. At AnimalParadise, we offer fat balls and suet blocks designed for safe, effective feeding.
When and why offer fat balls?
Fat balls are mostly given from autumn to early spring, when birds’ energy needs soar. Very rich in fat, they help tits, sparrows and robins keep warm and rebuild their reserves. In fine weather, keep them for cool spells, as fat keeps poorly in the heat.
Netted or net-free fat balls: which to favour?
Net-free is strongly recommended. Plastic nets can trap birds’ toes or tongues and cause injury. Prefer net-free fat balls, placed in a suitable holder or dispenser that is safer and reusable. If you use netted balls, always remove the packaging before offering them.
Our fat ball and suet block range
- Seed fat balls : an energy-rich classic, to place in a dedicated holder.
- Net-free fat balls : safer for birds, to slip into a reusable dispenser.
- Suet blocks and cakes : generous formats, perfect for busy feeding points.
The AnimalParadise expert tip: always favour net-free fat balls and a suitable holder: plastic nets pose a real injury risk. Avoid offering fat in hot weather, as it turns rancid quickly.
