Help your birds build a cosy nest

During the breeding season, your birds look for material to line and fill their nest. Plant fibres, cotton, lint and soft materials make building easier, insulate the eggs and give the chicks a safe, comfortable bed. These products go with the nest — they do not replace the nest box itself.

Which nesting materials should I choose for each species?

Canaries and softbills like cotton and fine lint to line the bottom of the nest; parakeets and large parrots prefer coconut fibre, sisal or shavings to scratch and arrange. Choose natural, untreated materials with no loose thread that could tangle around the feet.

When and how should I offer the materials?

Offer them at the first signs of display and pairing, in small renewed amounts, in a fibre holder or directly at the bottom of the cage. Let the bird choose and arrange its own lint: it is a natural behaviour that stimulates the breeding instinct.
