Chinchilla food
Feeding a chinchilla: simplicity and fibre
The chinchilla is a herbivore with an especially delicate digestion, used in the wild to sparse, fibrous food. Its ration must stay simple: unlimited hay, specific pellets and above all no fatty or sugary food. At AnimalParadise, we select plain, safe references, the opposite of rich mixes that put its digestive system at risk.
Why is a chinchilla’s digestion so sensitive?
Its digestive tract is built for a very fibrous, low-energy diet. Food that is too fatty or too sugary upsets its gut flora and can cause bloating, diarrhoea and potentially serious transit blockages. Hay and suitable pellets are the only truly safe pillars of its ration.
Which pellets should you give a chinchilla?
Choose chinchilla-specific pellets that are uniform, high in fibre and free of seeds, fruit or coloured pieces. Given in a small measured amount, they complement hay rather than replace it. Strictly avoid mixes meant for other species, often too energy-rich for it.
Our range of chinchilla food
- Unlimited hay : the essential, permanent base of the ration, for transit and tooth wear.
- Specific pellets : uniform fibre-rich formulas, in a small measured portion each day.
- Dried herbs : fibrous plants given in small amounts to add variety without excess sugar.
The AnimalParadise expert tip: banish dried fruit, fatty seeds and sugary treats; in a chinchilla, these overly rich foods can trigger serious digestive trouble.
AnimalParadise selects reliable hays and pellets and delivers throughout Europe, to respect your chinchilla’s delicate digestion.
