Doves and pigeons
Feeding your doves and pigeons well
Diamond doves, ringneck doves and park pigeons prefer larger seeds than small songbirds. A mix of cereals and legumes covers the needs of these calm, gregarious ground-feeding birds.
Which seeds suit a turtle dove?
Columbids favour large seeds: cracked maize, wheat, sorghum, peas and vetches. This starch-richer type of mix suits their beak and digestion better than fine mixes.
Should I offer grit to columbids?
Yes: as they often swallow the seed whole, grit and a calcium source help the gizzard grind large seeds and support eggshell formation in females.
Our range for doves and pigeons
- Columbid mixes : cracked maize, wheat, sorghum and legumes for doves and pigeons.
- Cereals and legumes : peas, vetches and small cereals to round out the base mix.
- Grit and minerals : grit, oyster shell and cuttlebone for the gizzard and laying.
The AnimalParadise expert tip: always offer grit in a separate dish, free choice: the columbid helps itself as needed, ensuring good digestion of large seeds without waste.
