Pond planting basket
Every plant in its place: the basket that makes planting and upkeep easy.
In short: a pond basket is an openwork container that holds the plant and its aquatic compost. It keeps the substrate in, lets water reach the roots, curbs the spread of invasive plants and lets you lift a plant out easily for maintenance or overwintering.
Our range of baskets
- Single baskets, from small (11 x 11 cm) to large (35 x 35 cm).
- Packs of 3 baskets to kit out a whole pond at once.
- Fine-mesh models that hold the substrate without a planting liner.
Which basket size should I choose?
- Marginal and oxygenating plants (small) → baskets 11 to 19 cm.
- Medium-sized plants → baskets 22 to 28 cm.
- Water lilies and large plants → 35 cm basket, with enough substrate volume for several seasons.
Do I need a liner in the basket?
With a heavy aquatic compost and a gravel finish, fine-mesh baskets need no liner. For a finer substrate or a coarse-mesh basket, a planting liner (or hessian) stops the soil escaping into the water.
AnimalParadise expert tip: always choose a basket slightly larger than the current root ball. A cramped plant tires and flowers less; conversely, the basket restrains invasive species just enough so they do not take over the whole pond.
